Walchsee and Royan

I had two consecutive race weekends. First one was Challenge Walchsee which was also European Championship at middle distance triathlon. I managed to put together maybe my best race at this distance and came away with ninth place. Not too impressive, but I wasn’t far away from much better placing. Fifth place was only 1:30 minutes in front of me. I was happy with race day execution, but it looks like the performance gains I made at full distance didn’t fully transfer to this distance. That’s something I’d like to improve in years to come.

Only six days after I traveled to Royan on France’s Atlantic coast. Once again it was half distance race. I wasn’t sure how will my body react to such a short recovery time and long travel. Everything went great for 2 thirds of the race. I finally had a solid swim. Not breaking any records, but compared to other races this year I swam very well. Bike was the best part of the race. After putting few watts more than in Walchsee I got off the bike in 3rd spot. The tiredness showed on the run. First few kilometers were quick, but after one short run over sandy beach I felt like all my energy was gone. By the end I lost 2 places and finished in 5th spot. Once again, the gaps were small and I was 1:18 minutes away from the podium.

Everything considered I’m happy with my performance. Now I’m in last big training block for this season. Recovery was quick and I’m training quite well at the moment, so I think I’m on the right track for Kona.
